What is a DOT Drug Test?

A DOT drug test is a mandatory 5-panel screen for employees in safety-sensitive positions. These tests are strictly regulated to protect public safety and minimize workplace accidents. As of 2026, the DOT permits both urine and oral fluid (saliva) testing methods.

Substances Screened

Every DOT-mandated test screens for the following five categories:

Marijuana (THC) (Note: CBD use is not a valid medical excuse for a positive THC result), Cocaine, Amphetamines (including Methamphetamine, MDMA, and MDA), Opioids (Heroin, Codeine, Morphine, Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Hydrocodone, and Hydromorphone), Phencyclidine (PCP)

When is Testing Required?

Return-to-Duty (RTD): Required after a violation; must be overseen by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).

Critical 2026 Regulatory Updates

Automatic CDL Downgrades: As of late 2024, the FMCSA now mandates that any driver in a “Prohibited” status in the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse will automatically lose their state-issued commercial driving privileges. Licensing agencies will now suspend or revoke CDLs until the Return-to-Duty process is fully completed.

Annual MIS Reporting: All DOT-regulated employers must now submit their annual drug and alcohol testing data via Login.gov.
